South Africa’s animal protection laws form the foundation for safeguarding animal welfare, public health, and responsible ownership. While the current legal framework includes several key Acts — from the Animal Protection Act of 1962 to the Meat Safety Act and biodiversity legislation — it remains fragmented and often outdated. Here are some of the most important legislation/regulations affecting animals:

  1. Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962
  2. Performing Animals Protection Act 24 of 1935
  3. Animal Matters Amendment Act 42 of 1993
  4. Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 169 of 1993
  5. Meat Safety Act 40 of 2000
  6. Animal Diseases Act 35 of 1984 [Repealed]
  7. National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 (NEMBA)
  8. National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act 57 of 2003
  9. Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998
  10. Veterinary and Para-Veterinary Professions Act 19 of 1982
